Yangshuo Weather

The Yangshuo weather is divided in 4 seasons. When is the best time of the year to visit? What kind of clothing you need to bring? Let's explore the Yangshuo weather
Yangshuo is blessed with 4 seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter. During my travels in China I spend time in all seasons in Yangshuo.

Whatever climate you like, spring and autumn are probably the best times of the year to visit. In those periods it's usually dry and warm (though not too warm). Summers can be hot and raining while winters can be grey, miserable and wet. So lets see.

Spring in Yangshuo

Spring in Yangshuo is a good time of the year to visit. Spring last from March to May. In March the day temperature can be chilly but as soon as April comes, the temperature goes up to a pleasant 20°C (70°F). Typically it is dry and although there's occasionally a shower, this is the time of the year when Yangshuo's limestone mountains show some of it's real beauty. Clear skies and sunshine, now the mountains look like paradise. Get a bicycle, go for a raft or a kayak and you will understand what I mean.

Longsheng, Sanjiang are slightly cooler, also because Ping An is slightly higher. Still, for this area too, spring is an excellent time to visit.

Summer in Yangshuo

June to August is summertime in Yangshuo. With temperatures in between 25°C (80°F) to about 38°C (100°F) it can be hot and humid. By the end of May and June you may experience some heavy rains that sometimes last a whole day or even more. I remember cycling in that time to Yangshuo with two weeks of rain alone.

Later in June it's getting better but the temperature goes up to a whopping 38°C (100°F) in the shadow. Air-conditioning and fans are essential in this period. If you go out, protect yourself for sunburn and wear a hat.

Autumn

The good Yangshuo weather continues in October. In November the gloomy weather starts coming. Although it won't rain much, he temperature is moderate at 20°C (70°F) but drops in December to about 5°c to about 15°c (40°F to 60°F). Although this may sound nice to those who prefer cooler weather, it's also less interesting to go out and explore. Sceneries are not as nice as the skies are often grey (though no rain). The hot weather continues until late September.

Going out in the pouring rain

That said, Christmas in Yangshuo might be interesting. You may see some snow but it's not common.

Winter

With temperatures between 5°c to about 15°c (40°F to 60°F), this is not the time to enjoy Yangshuo at its best. The somber dark days do not make you want to go out and explore. But it is certainly the time when Yangshuo is quiet. In older cafes you will get a coconut below the tables to heat the place up. Others have electric heaters. Your hotel rooms, unless you decide to stay at the very cheap end will have heaters in the room and trust me, you will enjoy them!

Best time to visit

The Yangshuo weather varies over the year. Thus it does make sense to make sure you are coming in a good time. Now if you ask us, we would say, April and May and the period July to halfway November are excellent periods to visit. You will have mostly dry weather, and while in the summer the temperature can be quite high it is still an excellent moment to enjoy the beauty of Yangshuo.

Longsheng, Sanjiang and Zhaoxing

Although Longsheng, Sanjiang and Zhaoxing are not too far from Guilin and Yangshuo, the climate is slightly different. Best times of the year are similar to Yangshuo but in the summer, especially June and July there may be more showers a day then in Yangshuo. As you are here in the hills, the average temperature is slightly lower then in Yangshuo itself.

I remember one day in June when I cycled up to Ping An and some heavy thunderstorm literally attacked me in the last few kilometers climbing. But as fast as the thunderstorm came, as fast the sun and the summer heat came back too.

Bottom line is that you should not feel dis-encouraged to visit in a lesser time of the year , weather wise. All seasons have their specific beauties but, if you ask us, some periods are more beautiful then others.

Bicycling Xingping to Guilin

I did it twice and it was pleasant, using the backroads from Xingping to Guilin. Sure, it takes a bit longer and it's harder as the road is not everywhere as good as you wish but it's a scenic road, worth the effort

Longsheng/Sanjiang

Over the years I have been cycling to and fro Longsheng and Sanjiang. And apart of those two towns being very interesting, the roads here are interesting too.
