Yangshuo - rainy season

The Yangshuo rainy season is worse in years in 2008. Our tour operator and guide Jessie Lu did send us a few photos of the Yangshuo town center.

yangshuo flood Heavy rains in May and early June are not uncommon in this time of the year. This year is the worst in years. Some years ago, I spend those weeks in Yangshuo. The water came then into West Street but I wasn't prepared for what Jessie has send me right now.

Jessie told me the water had destroyed her parents house. We don't have (yet) any photos of this catastrophe, but it seems her parents house is totally destroyed by the huge amounts of water. Jessie herself lives in Yangshuo from where she operates her business.

Although the water is lower and most is outside the town center, the Lijiang and Yulong rivers are still very high.

It's not just Yangshuo affected by the rains. State media report that "... massive flooding across a broad stretch of southern China have killed almost 60 people and forced 1.3 million others from their homes".

The flood in south China are a new huge problem for the already tortured Chinese population. The earth quake in Sichuan followed by the artificial lakes created by the quake make this year a disaster.

The rains in Yangshuo and south China are not over, at the moment of writing, it is still raining and the forecast is that it will continue raining for another few days at least.

It rains at the moment in Guangdong, Guangxi, Yunnan, Sichuan and Guizhou. Economic losses have reached $1.5 billion because of the floods, according to the State Media channels. More than 45,000 houses collapsed and 140,000 had been damaged.
