The rice terraces and the Wind and Rain bridges
The rice terraces of Longsheng are famous. In fact the rice terraces are to be found 15 km out of Longsheng town center. And in this part of China there is more to experience.
Come with us and explore not only the rice terraces but also Sanjiang, the gateway to Dong and Miao Minority county. Further we explore Zhaoxing, the largest Dong village in the region.
Longsheng, Ping An and the rice terraces
88 km north west from Guilin the little town of Longsheng is a center in the region. The area has many minorities. The main majority groups here are the Miao and the Dong. About 25 km from Longsheng you will find quite a bit up in the hills the little village of Ping An.
Ping An is the main village here. You can stay here and enjoy the beautiful rice terraces, which, some claim, are to be at its best in early June.
We have 3 tours which include a visit to Longji
- 5 days: Longji, Li River Cruise & the best of Yangshuo
- 7 Days: Minority and adventure tour
- 8 Days: Yangshuo, Li River Cruise, Longji & Wind & Rain Bridge
However, if you want to visit on your own, that is also possible, click here for more details about Longsheng, Ping An and the rice terraces
Sanjiang, Chengyang Qiao and the Wind and Rain Bridge
Sanjiang has a lot to offer although the best parts are 18 km north of the town center in Chengyang Qiao. Here you will find many Dong minority villages, typical Dong Wind and Rain Bridges and Dong Drum Towers.
Wind and Rain Bridge Chengyang Qiao (Sanjiang)
The bridge, the most beautiful and best preserved Wind and Rain Bridge of the Dong people is almost 100 years old.
There are trekkings to do in the area, the easiest one is to climb up one of the hills to have a spectacular view over the area.
We visit Sanjiang in our 8 days tour, more details here
Chengyang Qiao, Sanjiang from above the hill
Zhaoxing is the largest Dong village in this part of China. The village has 3 Wind and Rain Bridges and 5 drum towers. Maybe the bridges are not as beautiful as in Sanjiang but there are three of them. The 5 drum towers are still in use for central events and announcements. In the town there’s a few quest houses and hotels.
The magnificent village of Zhaoxing in Guizhou
The village is surrounded by beautiful hill slopes. Many people still wear traditional Dong clothing.
Trekking in the area is supposed to be spectacular which I can image. The only time I was in Zhaoxing was in the rainy season when I took the old road, which goes through the mountains to Zhaoxing.
This old road passes several villages (and many rice terraces), some even have very basic quest houses. The scenery here is spectacular. People are usually very poor but also happy to see foreigners visiting.
The town has several hotels and guesthouses.
Zhaoxing is not included in any of our official tours. However, we do offer the possibility to visit Zhaoxing, contact us for details what we can offer you
Getting further into Guizhou province
Yes it is possible to travel further into Guizhou province and explore more about the minorities living here. Traveling here requires more time as distances grow and road and transport become more difficult.
A very unusual Wind and Rain Bridge deep in the mountains of Guizhou
My recommendation is to explore this area with a guide. To be honest, my first 2 visits here were without a guide, on a bicycle and although I have seen quite a bit, I did not see many other place, especially around Congjiang where you can go trekking into the mountains and find real gems.
Ladies preparing for the annual singing contest, usually held in February
The road can lead from Zhaoxing to Congjiang, Ronjiang and further to Kaili and Guiyang. Should you wish to do a tour with us to explore the minority areas, please contact us.
