Longsheng, Ping An and the Longji Rice Terraces

Longsheng is a town 88km north of Guilin. It is a small town with little to hold you there except the nearby Longji rice terraces around Ping An village. These rice terraces are a must visit for every visitor to this part of China.

The local population have been using the hills to the ultimate maximum by creating terraces on which they grow their rice. The hills climb steeply up from roughly 400 meter to almost 900 meter. The terraces were mostly built during the Ming Dynasty (around 500 years back).

The main village to visit here is Ping An, which is where you can stay and enjoy a spectacular views over the steep mountain slopes. Although the whole year the scenery is spectacular, some consider June as the best month to visit as by then the water is pumped into the fields.

Getting There

We get questions of people who want to see Longsheng but do not want to join a tour. Fair enough. So, how do you travel to Longsheng, Ping An and the Longji Rice Terraces?

From Yangshuo you can take a taxi, this is the fastest way. However, if you want to use the bus, this is how you do it:

  1. Take the bus from Yangshuo to Guilin (1 to 1.5 hrs)
  2. Go to the main bus station in Guilin (walking, about 20 minutes)
  3. Take the local bus to Longsheng (around 2 hours)
  4. Get off the bus at the junction to Longji (there should be mini
    buses on a regular base)
  5. Wait for the local mini bus to Ping An village (about 30 minutes)

You will have to cross the bridge and walk up the stairs path to Ping An. In case you do not want to carry your bags, there are porters available to bring your luggage up.

Travel time with local transport (buses) should be around 4-5 hours including waiting time and transport in Guilin from one bus station to the other. A taxi can bring you to Ping An in about 2-3 hours direct to the bridge in Ping An.
