I was in Yangshuo about a month ago with my 23 year old son and 26 year old daughter. I had been to trip advisor.com and told that the Yangtze river cruise (which I'd already booked) was not great. It was suggested by my dauhter, who is living in Shenzhen, China that we do the Li river cruise from Guilin.

This is one of the very best decisions I have ever made! The scenery is so beautiful that we spent the entire 4 hour cruise on the deck and Yangshuo is not to be missed. If you have the cash, spend it on the hot air balloon ride. It was stunning and my kids both loved it.

There is also an evening show that is THE most spectacular I have ever seen. I've traveled throughout the U.S. and Europe but this show cannot be missed!!! We didn't even know about the show until our guide suggested it. She was able to get us tickets through a cancellation. It should be noted that this is entirely in Chinese but the music has some Western composition so if don't think is like Chinese Opera, which I also happened to love. This show is stunning and poignant and you will LOVE it!!! The show is called Impressions and was directed by the director of the movie Hero and is also directing the upcoming Olympic opening ceremonies. That should be enough of an introduction! (Liu Sanjie Show)

I loved all that I saw in China but Yangshuo is will always have a place in my heart!

Hi JoAnn,

I will see next month how much Yangshuo has been changed. It's great to hear it is still a gem, and yes, I'd like to receive photos, we're always happy to publish more and more. Yangshuo deserves more attention but... I also agree... too much... hmm

Thanks

Lui Jianjie Show
by: JoAnn Christy

Hi Peter,

I would like to add that if you go to this show, ask your guide to explain to you all the parts of it before you go. Our guide was most helpful in doing this so we could understand exactly what was going on which made the show even better. But I have to say that even if we didn't understand a single thing, it was the most gorgeous, rich production I have ever seen. Maybe I've been lucky to have seen much in my life and so have much to compare this to.

This is one of those things that you don't want to tell people TOO much about because it was such a fabulous little jewel that we weren't expecting. As you said, the backdrop, unbelievable. If you go, buy the cd set so you can listen to the music when you get home. You'll be able to remember the spectacular scenes and the perfection of it all. I'll ask my husband to send some photos from the Li River cruise as well as the hot air ballon ride. He wasn't there but I don't know how to send photos!

Thanks for such a great site Peter...but don't tell TOO many people about Yangshuo....

We always love to hear from people about their experiences. Thank you for sharing!

When I was told about the Liu Janjie show I was hesitating, I expected a very tacky kind of show but it was an masterpiece. The setting was great, the story reasonable easy to follow and the setting at that part of the river IS stunning.

It's wonderful to hear you enjoyed Yangshuo so much:)!
