Hiking in Yangshuo

Where many people get a bicycle, I walked out of town to do some hiking in Yangshuo. It is funny how easy you can get out of town and be far away from any person. So yes, you can get away from the crowds, local and foreign alike.

On this page you will find a hike I did (for the first time in the 13 years I come in Yangshuo) which takes 3 to 4 hours and is easy to do on your own. There are no signs but you can't get lost too. And with respect to most of the guides, they either don't know this hike, or don't want to know it claiming it is not interesting. I would suggest, see for yourself.

So, where do we start? Get the map of Yangshuo. We'll walk out of Yangshuo from the 7th Heaven Cafe and Hostel. Just walk north to the hospital (Shenshan Rd), (see the bicycle in the middle of the top of the map). It's about 15 minutes to walk to the gate the town is building. There is a junction. Follow the direction to Jiaoba Lin. The sign board will say it's 9.5 km. Just follow this road straight, a few hundred meters to the next village.

Going out hiking in Yangshuo brings you to the following junction where you will have the following view:

Not spectacular? Well, hiking in Yangshuo in this area offers more an idea of being away from the crowds, I know. The village is a few hundred meters further. It's a small very local village. In the middle of the village is a path left (west). You walk in the village. Some villagers will be surprised as seldom foreigners come here.

There are some nice fruit yards and a very old house.

From the above house you follow a small road to the west. You will have the mountains and Yangshuo town on your left hand. There's a small well, were you may see people doing laundry or dishes. The village has plenty of noisy dogs but they won't harm you.

The road soon become a dirt path. Slowly it goes up. The path becomes smaller. It is clear few, if any people come here often.

When the path starts ascending, it becomes again a stone path at some points. You will see it leads to the lower part where two hills connect. The higher you come, the more views you get. Sure, they're not the most spectacular in Yangshuo, but they're nice enough to enjoy them:

The view from the highest point you will reach

Some of the time the path seems to disappear, but soon re-appears again. Once at the highest point, you will see the land in the back.

There are no signs of human activity in this area. It's just untouched wilderness. The path slowly swindles down. The best advice is to follow the widest (main) path. But in fact it does not really matter. You will pass a small grave with some beautiful flowers on it.

By that time you can hear the traffic from trucks and buses from the road from Yangshuo to Baisha and Guilin. Once you are back on the main road, you can either stop one of the many buses to Yangshuo or continue the last 2 km on the main road back to town.

Question of course is if it worth. I would say YES. Especially if you have a few hours left over.
