Guilin Attractions: Qingshitan Reservoir and Dam
One of the Guilin attractions is the Qingshitan Reservoir and dam. The reservoir is located 35 km north of Guilin city. It is a huge reservoir build for flood protection.
The dam build for flood protection
It is seldom visited despite being very beautiful. I came to visit it in May 2011 because I saw photos that looked very promising to include in our tours. But before I could make a decision to include it or not, I better have a first look myself.
As I would cycle to Guilin, I decided I could easily visit in a day from Guilin. It would turn out to be different when I told William from 7th Heaven Cafe and Hostel, Cloud 9 and Snow Lion Riverside Resort about my plan. Instead of cycling, we took the next day a taxi.
Starting point of our boat ride on the river arm and Qingshitan Lake
The reservoir is located 35 km north of Guilin and around 100km from Yangshuo. With the new highway it is easy accessible as the highway turns
north of Guilin, just 15 km from the reservoir. It could be one of the major Guilin attractions but, at this moment, 2011, it is not.
On the boat towards the Qingshitan Lake
The small road brought it right at the dam. Although the sight was pretty, it was not what I had expected. This was not a lake but a river arm.
I was disappointed, was this all? William however thought this was an excellent moment to enjoy the day while we were here. He organized a boat for a two hour ride on the lake.
Once on the water, it looked amazingly beautiful. Williams’ wife Linda however, brought it all back to basics: “it’s a lake, with water and mountains with tree surrounding it, what’s the fuzz?” She was absolutely right!
The boat followed the river right into a huge reservoir. I thought it was wonderfully peaceful.
Apart of some fishing activities I saw no signs of life. The water was still, the sun hot and even the motor of the boat seemed more silent. This was a beautiful place.
Local fisherman on the lake
We continued to somewhere in the middle of the north side of the lake where there was a restaurant and a resort. It seemed all very quiet. Despite the possibility of water sports, there was nothing going on.
There’s a few boats available for exploring the lake
In fact, at the empty restaurant we found a few boats in bad state, and the resort itself seemed to be empty too. This was clearly not one of those popular Guilin attractions much visited.
Is it worth to visit this Guilin Attraction?
The question remained when we sailed back to our departing point: should we included a visit to the Qingshitan Reservoir and dam in our tours. After consulting with Jessie, we decided not.
However, is it worth to visit? Personally I loved it. Being a few hours on a boat on the lake was a beautiful experience.
Getting and staying there
There is no public transport to the Qingshitan Reservoir and dam, so you have to go their on your own. We can also not offer you a reservation of the resort should you want to stay here. What we can offer is an arrangement for visiting on a day base, even including in one of our tours, should you want that. A visit with a starting point in Yangshuo will take the whole day.
