Camping in and around Yangshuo

by Erwin

Hallo,
I will be traveling to Yangshuo in November for 3 weekes.
I have been looking for camping sites around Yangshuo but have had trouble finding anything online.
Are there camping grounds in the area?
What are the regulations on camping in the moutains? can you place a tent everywhere you like?
I am looking for a nice peaceful place to stay a few weeks, i am taking my own camping gear and also taking my rock climbing gear to do some rock clibming.
Do you have any suggestions for me?

Thanks

Erwin

camping in yangshuo

Camping in Yangshuo (and China), there are no official camping grounds (like in Europe in China). The idea of camping with sleeping in an uncomfortable tent is quite alien to the Chinese.

And with guesthouses and cheap hotels, why bother? But that said, there are opportunities to camp though it's not officially encouraged or allowed. But it is certainly possible. However, be prepared to get nosy locals hanging around.

Some areas at the Li Jiang river are excellent for camping. For example, some kilometers out of Yangshuo at the river bank on the way to Fuli and Puyi there are good camping grounds (not on the way north to Guilin but east of Yangshuo).

Also it is possible to camp when taking the road out of Xingping to Guilin, the old road. I have been camping there myself once. For an idea of this road, check this page:

Some km's outside Xingping (north) there's a small river in the middle of the padifields and you can easily set up a tent a bit in the direction of the mountains. This is also an area the rock climbers use.

The main problem will be to keep your materials safe. Once locals find out you're there, you will frequently get visits and if you are not around, who knows what happens with your belongings. For that reason we do not advice camping for more then a night or alone. Should you still want, do not come alone and make sure your stuff is never left unguarded. Remember, even in this part of China, almost every piece of land is used for agriculture.
