Having spend over 3 weeks in Yangshuo just now in August, I found, again, a whole lot of things have changed. In this newsletter we will tell you about some of the changes. At the same time I have been exploring the Yangshuo countryside, as I usually do. And to my never ending surprise I found trails I have never visited before. So we will tell you all about that too.
All this would not have been possible with the help of Jessie Lu, who as always in the last 8 years have been an invaluable guide, helper and most of all great friend in Yangshuo.
As usual I stayed in William and Linda's 7th Heaven Cafe & Hostel until the room needed some repairs (no not because of me!) and they wanted me to move to their 3 star Snow Lion Riverside Resort. And trust me, there's only few hotels better then the Snow Lion. Thanks as always Linda and William.

Sovereign Hotel Yangshuo

For me, the Sovereign Hotel in Yangshuo was one of the surprises. The location of the hotel is really good, right in between Yangshuo's busy town center and the famous Liu Sanjie Impressions Lightshow.
What makes this hotel such great stay? Firstly the price and quality of the hotel rooms are a really good value. The views, especially from the VIP building over the Lijiang river are amazing. For the views over the Lijiang alone you would want to stay here.
The restaurant is excellent. I had the pleasure to enjoy a breakfast here. I was very impressed, and not only about the entrance of the hotel, the rooms or the breakfast. It was the whole package that made me realize this is an excellent choice for travelers. Highly recommended!

Bicycling around Yangshuo: 6 pages with extensive descriptions of bike trails

Since the "discovery" of Yangshuo in the early 1980's, bicycling is one of the most favorable activities. I come already almost 15 years in Yangshuo and I think I have seen most of the trails in the area. But things chance so every time I visit, I try to cycle some.
This time I had quite a bit of time so I cycled most of the trails I knew. This gave the opportunity to offer you the most up to date photos and situation of the trails. Many trails used to be no more then small dirt tracks but many have been transformed into asphalt or macadam roads.
The consequence is that some roads are no longer that much fun to cycle, for example: the Gong Nong Bridge to Jima village passing Dragon River Retreat and Mountain View is now a busy road with tractors and buses riding on and off.
Fortunately there are many trails still left and worth exploring. You can do that with Jessie or you can do it on your own. Here's more about the bicycling options around Yangshuo:
And I found some trails unknown to most travelers, like the trail behind the Zuthou mountains, another little traveled road to Baisha and the back roads around Moonhill. I hope you enjoy!

Oil Paintings of Yangshuo

Some years ago I got in touch with a Chinese painter who was specialized in oil painting. He had some beautiful pieces but when I asked him if he could do Yangshuo/Guilin scenery, he said there's no market for. And that's where it ended ... until now!!
