Yangshuo News, Issue #014: Tours, hotels, Erhu, hiking and more
September 14, 2009
Hi
Almost two months since our last newsletter. Has nothing happened in Yangshuo? There have been plenty of things going on. We will update you in this edition.
Hopefully very soon I will again visit Yangshuo. It's not 100% certain yet as there's so many other things to do too. However, the season in Yangshuo will roughly ending by the end of October, And to be honest, late October and November are excellent months to visit Yangshuo. The prime season is
over, the heat has also made space for more moderate temperatures. For example, I recommend my Malaysian friends to visit Yangshuo in this season as it is cooler.
Hotels are also easier to find. Some have even low season prices but don't count on it.
In this e-zine there's some news of what I did in Yangshuo:
Magnolia Hotel
Video of Yangshuo
Pudi Primary School
Jessie's 3 Days Tours
Moon Festival, where to eat?
Teaching in Yangshuo
Hiking just north of Yangshuo
Playing Erhu
Ride a bicycle in Yunnan
Happy reading!

==================================== Magnolia Hotel ====================================
The Magnolia Hotel in the center of Yangshuo town (near the Li River) has upgraded the rooms without increasing the prices! Was the Magnolia already a great hotel, it's even better nowadays. We have updated our page with a series of new photos:

A new video of Yangshuo:
==================================== Pudi Primary School ====================================
I ask again attention for the school in Pudi, the tiny village not far from Yangshuo. It's a village forgotten and
ignored by tourist and government alike. The villagers are mostly farmers who grow rice and vegetables. They are mostly poor. Jessie Lu, our tour guide, comes from Pudi and although she runs her business nowadays from Yangshuo, she has not
forgotten her hometown.
Several months ago, she started a small project to help the primary school in Pudi village. The school has a need for almost everything including books, writing materials. Even basic things like desks and chairs or a library are not available. Recently the school received a gift from a lady in Hong Kong of
Y5000. The gift sounds like a lot but in reality it hardly was enough to get the most basic materials in the school available. Much more is needed. Therefore we need your help:
==================================== Jessie's 3 days Tour ====================================
Jessie informed me her 3 days package tour is still one of her most popular tours. It's not surprising, as the tour contains concentrates on two of Yangshuo's most famous attractions: the Yangshuo surrounding and Xingping plus, in the evening a visit to the famous Liu Sanjie Light show. This tour is perfect
for people who have little time and want to get the maximum out of Yangshuo
==================================== Moon Festival in Yangshuo - where to eat ====================================
With the Moon Festival coming up it will be difficult to find a good place to
eat. As I always recommend, Cloud 9 is the best place. During the Moon Festival
they will have special dishes (and no, I won't tell you yet!). But I do give you
some recipes:
==================================== Teaching in Yangshuo/China ====================================
Travelers are always looking for a way to increase their finances. Teaching is
since long a way to increase the content of your wallet. In Yangshuo there are
many schools in need for foreign teachers. If you are interested, please look at
this page for more information about the how, what and where...
People have many questions, we have many answers. The website tries to answer
all questions, but there are always things not mentioned. So here's your chance
to ask us what you need to know:
==================================== Hiking north of Yangshuo ====================================
Although I love cycling, I also like hiking. There are numerous possibilities
for nice hikes. However, some very obvious hikes are seldom done. Just north of
Yangshuo, not even 2 km away you can get away from the crowds and dig in the
loneliness of the mountains.
==================================== Hiking up to the TV Tower ====================================
Some told me it was no longer possible, but I am a stubborn old man. The more people tell me it's not possible, the more I want to try, So, I tried to find the path up, which was not that easy..In about an hour I was at the top of the tower and nothing and no one had stopped me.
The sight from above is breathtaking, no other word describes what I saw. See for yourself. The video is a bit rambling, but that's what it is. Next time I will do a much better job, I promise.

Playing Erhu ====================================
The last time I was in Yangshuo, Jessie father played one of those traditional Chinese instrument, an erhu. The two string instrument has a beautiful sound. And Jessie's father is a good player, see the video on this page:
==================================== Ride a bicycle in Yunnan ====================================
Some call me crazy, others an adventurer, it doesn't matter. I ride a bicycle, wherever I go. For a beginner or experienced cyclist, Yunnan is an excellent option. There's plenty to see, there's plenty to experience and there's plenty of challenges and if you don't want them, you can keep it easy too... here's
where you start:
