Yangshuo News, Issue #012: Pudi School, weather, Green Lotus Hotel and More May 29, 2009 |
| Hi Welcome to a new edition of the Yangshuo newsletter. I've been busy the last weeks. In the last three weeks I have spend two weeks in the Malaysian jungle with limited internet connections. Obviously I couldn't add many new pages on the website. Jessie however, has been very busy.
Happy reading! Pudi Primary School ==================================== Pudi is a tiny village not far from Yangshuo. It's a village forgotten and ignored by tourist and government alike. The villagers are mostly farmers who grow rice and vegetables. They are mostly poor. Jessie Lu, our tour guide, comes from Pudi and although she runs her business nowadays from Yangshuo, she has not forgotten her hometown. Several months ago, she started a small project to help the primary school in Pudi village. The school has a need for almost everything including books and writing materials. Even basic things like desks and chairs or a library are not available. Recently the school received a gift from a lady in Hong Kong of Y5000. The gift sounds like a lot but in reality it hardly was enough to get the most basic materials in the school needed. Much more is needed. Therefore we need your help: - http://www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com/pudi-school.html You can help by donating at our Paypal account. We will keep you informed how the money is spend. In the second half of June I will visit Pudi and see for myself and in the next newsletter I will inform you further. ==================================== Green lotus Hotel ==================================== Conveniently located in between West Street and the Liu Sanjie Lightshow theatre, the Green Lotus Hotel is a brand new 5 star hotel with all the comfort you would expect from a 5 star hotel. As one of the few hotels in Yangshuo, the Green Lotus Hotel has a big swimming pool, which, in summer will be great. Views from most of the hotel rooms are spectacular and Jessie and I thought we have to recommend it to you! - http://www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com/green-lotus-hotel.html ==================================== Malaria in Yangshuo/Guilin? ==================================== Recently I received a question if there is a risk for malaria in Guilin and Yangshuo. The answer was short: No. Although the summers in Yangshuo are hot and humid, there is 100% no risk for malaria. That said, it is still recommended to bring your own first aid kit with you when you travel in this part the world. Guilin has a few international standard hospitals so there is no worries about that but if you are on the bicycle and have a small problem, it's always good to bring a small first aid kit. Here's what we suggest it should contain: - http://www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com/first-aid-kit.html ==================================== We like to hear from you ... ==================================== I can write a website full of information and I can think it is good and honest information. However, my reviews are my reviews, thus subjective. I try to be as honest as I can. Still, it's always better to get a second opinion, right? I like to hear them, other readers like to hear them too. For example, I like cycling, so I cycle a lot when I am in Yangshuo. Personally I find it rewarding and I tell you about that on many pages. You may say that I am preoccupied with my views. Thus, the best recommendations come from YOU. We like to hear from you, what you think of Yangshuo, what you did, where you stayed, what you have seen, whom you met, we want to know, other travelers want to know... - http://www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com/yangshuo-travel-stories.html#You Kevin Lapin wrote us a great review: - http://www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com/one-of-the-best-weekends-ever.html ==================================== Yangshuo weather, the start of the rainy season ==================================== The first two weeks of June are always wet. I have so my own memories about this time of the year in China. Some years ago I was cycling early June out of Yangshuo to Longsheng, Sanjiang and further to Zhaoxing and Liping. On the way to Liping I decided this was no longer fun. Most of the time my bicycle was dragged in the mud. Whole days of rain can be wearing you out, even if it is warm. Last year in June it was quite bad in Yangshuo. The rainy season usually don't take longer then about 2 or 3 weeks but in 2008 it was especially bad, see here some photos: - http://www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com/yangshuo-rainy-season.html Normally it's not that bad but whole days of rain do not make you enthusiastic to explore the surrounding limestone mountains. So, when is it the right time to come to Yangshuo? You can check our weather page for the best time of the year. - http://www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com/yangshuo-weather.html ==================================== Twitter and Facebook ==================================== For those of you who want to follow us on Twitter or Facebook, here are our Twitter and Facebook accounts: Twitter: http://twitter.com/psychling Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=636673166 ==================================== Interview with the Malay Mail in Malaysia ==================================== Last month I was invited for an interview with the Malay Mail in Malaysia. The reason was my websites. It gave me an opportunity to talk about about building websites, Pangkor, Malaysia, Yangshuo and Guilin and my bicycle journeys. Here is the full article: - http://www.yangshuo-travel-guide.com/interview-with-the-malay-mail.html ==================================== Do You Love To Travel? Make It Your Business! ==================================== It's possible... a travel website that pays your journeys... the Yangshuo website proofs it! Based on the money I earn I am able to travel. Personally I don't see any reason why it only works for me. What I can do, you can do too. A travel site doesn't have to be built around an exotic location. You are, after all, an expert on your city or region. - Build your own travel website =================================== Teaching in Yangshuo ==================================== If teaching is what you are looking for, Yangshuo is a good choice to teach. I did a few guest classes (if I can call them that way...) and it was good fun. Typically the classes are small which gives you a great interaction with the students. And students come from all over China. Interested in teaching in Yangshuo? Give Jeanie an email: jeaniehore46 AT gmail.com ----------------------------------------- |
